Profile

Marco Armiero is an environmental historian. He is currently a part-time research manager at CNR-ISMed to become director of the Environmental Humanities Laboratory at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. Before moving to Sweden, he carried out research at Yale University, the University of California in Berkeley, Stanford University, the Autonomous University of Barcelona, the Center for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra.

He has dealt with forest resources in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, commons and privatizations, fishing communities and traditional knowledge, social movements, environmental justice and waste, migration and ecological changes, showing an irresistible attraction for lost causes (to use the words of the philosopher Slavoj Žižek), for those who rebel or resist, for those who pay the price of the progress of others, for those stories that no one wants to tell. In Italian he has published about forty essays and several volumes.

In English he has published articles in Left History, Environment and History, Radical History Review, Capitalism Nature Socialism (of which he is senior editor), Modern Italy. His articles have also been published in Brazil, Spain and China.

Publications

He has published, among other things:

• History of the environment. An introduction (with S. Barca, 2000);

• curated Nature and History in Modern Italy (with M. Hall, 2010);

• The History of Environmentalism. Local Struggles, Local Histories (with L. Sedrez, 2014).

In 2013 he published, for Einaudi, Le montagne della patria. Nature and nation in the history of Italy (first edition Cambridge, UK, in 2011) with which he won the Gambrinus Mazzotti Award and the SAT Award, coming finalist at the Acqui Storia Award and the Turku Award.

For the Jaca Book she edited the book Teresa and the others. Stories of women in the Land of Fires (2014). 

Projects

He is part of the international doctoral programme ENTITLE (European Network of Political Ecology) and is the local coordinator of the new international doctoral programme in Environmental Humanities.

He is also coordinator of the international research group Justainability, selected by the International Social Science Council. He is part of the coordination of the Cost Action Program on Migration and Climate Change.
