Profile

Stefania Pafumi, archaeologist and historian of ancient art, since December 2016 has been a researcher at the Institute of Studies on Mediterranean Societies (ISSM) of the National Research Council of Naples.

Graduated in Classical Literature (archaeological ind.) at the University of Catania, she obtained a degree in Classical Archaeology and a PhD in Archaeology of Magna Graecia at the University of Naples “Federico II”. At the same university in Naples, she was the holder of a two-year scholarship for post-doctoral research activities.

In 2014 she obtained the National Scientific Qualification for the competition sector 10/A1 “Archaeology”, second level.

She has been a contract professor at the University of Catania, for the discipline of visual perception and artistic languages; owner of a teaching workshop on topography and antiques in Syracuse between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries for the degree course in Science of Cultural Heritage; contract professor at the University of Catania for the discipline: The rediscovery of the ancient.

From 2011 to 2014 she was Research Fellow at the Department of Humanities of the University of Catania with the research program: Archaeological contexts, collections of antiquities and museums in Sicily in the eighteenth century: historical-archaeological and archaeological surveys.

He has collaborated with the chair of Archaeology and History of Greek and Roman Art at the University of Naples “Federico II”, with the Archaeological Superintendence of Naples and with the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, to the project of study and publication of the sculptures of the Farnese Collection.

He has given lectures and seminars at the School of Specialization in Archaeology of the University of Naples “Federico II” on: Severe style sculpture in Magna Graecia and Sicily; at the Doctorate in Archaeological and Historical-Artistic Sciences of the University of Naples “Federico II” on the theme: Collections of antiquities and museums in Catania in the 18th century; at the Doctorate in “Studies on cultural heritage” of the University of Catania on the theme: Catania and the ancient in the 18th century. Collecting, excavations, museums.

Participates in the scientific project of the National Edition of the works of Pirro Ligorio promoted by the National Committee for the Study and Valorization of the Work of Pirro Ligorio at the Centre for Studies on Culture and Image in Rome.

Visiting Scholar at the Institute of Archaeology of the University of Oxford (Sackler Library, Bodleian Library, Cast Gallery, Ashmolean Museum), he has also conducted research at the Eton College Library in Windsor.

He has participated in numerous archaeological excavation campaigns (Paphos-Cyprus, Cerveteri, Cuma) and has presented papers at national and international conferences. On behalf of the University of Catania, he organized the round table Objects, men, ideas. Multidisciplinary paths for the history of eighteenth-century collecting (Catania, 4 -12-2006).

In the course of her research and study she has mainly dealt with Greek and Roman sculpture; copystic production of the Roman era; museums and collections of antiquities from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century; the survival of the ancient in the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries; antiquarian and museology; archaeometry; digitization and enhancement of cultural heritage.

Projects

She is currently engaged in the scientific coordination of interdisciplinary study projects on the historical collections of the Civic Museum of Catania, on the library collections of the Benedictines of Catania and in general on the collections of Sicilian antiquities of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

From 2013 to the present, the Department of Humanities at the University of Catania is carrying out research and scientific coordination activities within the project “Science and Technology – Digital Library” aimed at the reconstruction, digitization and enhancement of the eighteenth-century library of Benedictines merged into the historical collections of the libraries Riunite Civica and A. Ursino Recupero of Catania.
