Profile

Souadou Lagdaf is Associate Professor of the History of Islamic Countries (STAA-01/J) at the University of Catania, where she is a member of the Doctoral College in Science for Cultural Heritage and Production. Since 2024 she has been a collaborating associate member of the Institute for Mediterranean Studies (ISMED) of the CNR. Her research interests include the history of Western Sahara, the Sanusiyya Brotherhood in Libya, the social anthropology of customs, traditions and religious commandment in Mauritanian society, as well as gender and immigration issues. She published a book on Western Sahara entitled “The Unresolved Colonisation. Western Sahara from Spain to Morocco”; book chapters and articles in academic journals (The Journal of North African Studies; Oriente Moderno; Meridiana; Revista de Estudios Internacionales Mediterráneos (REIM) and others)

She is a member: of the editorial board of the journals Meridiana and Global Environment [2024], of the Centro Universitario de estudios sobre el Sahara Occidental (CESO) at the Universidad de Santiago de Compostela (USC) [2022], the board of the Istituto Siciliano per la Storia dell’Italia contemporanea Carmelo Salanitro (ISSICO) [2018], the International Academic Observatory of Western Sahara (OUISO) [2017] and member of the board of directors of the publishing series: Intelligere. Mediare tra identità e alterità, Agorà & Co, Lugano [2016].
