Rosalucia Mazzei

Profile
Rosalucia Mazzei is a Senior Researcher at the Institute for Mediterranean Studies of the National Research Council of Italy (CNR), based in Naples. Her scientific activity is distinguished by a strongly interdisciplinary approach, integrating expertise in medical genetics, neurology, ethnobotany, traditional medicine, and the historical development of agrarian landscapes.
Among her major contributions are a comprehensive review on genomic copy number variations (CNVs) and their correlation with stroke (Copy Number Variations and Stroke, 2016), and a recent study examining plant-based therapeutic approaches from Italian folk medicine for menstrual disorders (Plants in Menstrual Diseases: A Systematic Study from Italian Folk Medicine on Current Approaches, 2024). She has also carried out research in the field of ethnopharmacology, investigating traditional and historical botanical remedies for headaches and skin diseases, reinterpreted in the light of current pharmacological knowledge. Within biomedical research, Rosalucia Mazzei has contributed to genetic studies on neurological disorders and rare conditions—such as ROBO3 gene mutations and investigations on CADASIL—demonstrating methodological versatility across life sciences and environmental sciences.
Her scholarly output also includes research addressing environmental and historical transformations of rural landscapes. In this framework, she contributed as an author to the collective volume Terre di bonifica. La Piana di Sibari: un paesaggio in continuo divenire, stemming from a research project on the rural landscape, historical reconstruction, and territorial transformations of the Sibari Plain (Calabria).
Rosalucia Mazzei also helded significant institutional roles: she has been appointed by the CNR as a member of the Steering Board, Executive Committee, and Scientific Committee, as President, of the ITS IRIDEA Foundation, a Higher Technical Institute for Made in Italy excellence in the agro-food sector, where she contributes to strengthening the connection between research, advanced education, and the productive system. She is also engaged in scientific outreach initiatives, including participation in the CNR “Researchers at Schools” program, in the Program of SuperScienceMe, which was awarded in 2023 during the “Case Conference”.
