Jean Monnet EURSLAM Module – Europe, European Integration and Muslin presence

TITLE: Jean Monnet EURSLAM Module – Europe, European Integration and Muslin presence

KEY WORDS: Europe; Muslims; Islam; Integration

SUMMARY

In an increasingly multicultural European context, it is important to get to know one of the growing entities within the European context: the Muslim community. The characteristics of the Islamic presence in Europe deserve to be studied in depth from a historical point of view, in order to outline its peculiar aspects, from a legal point of view and finally from a geopolitical point of view.

The project aims to provide a basis for study and analysis of the complex relations between the European context and the Muslim communities within it.

In order to be able to analyse the Islamic presence from an economic, social and cultural perspective, the project plans to address a number of topics including:

  • the historical evolution of EEC/EU policy towards the southern and south-eastern shores of the Mediterranean;
  • relations with the Western Balkan area and the dynamics related to EU enlargement, starting with the Turkish issue;
  • migration policies related to arrivals from countries with a Muslim majority;
  • the issue of freedom of religion, belief and worship in Europe, in the face of the growing Muslim presence;
  • the role of religious minorities and the possibility and opportunity to define the characteristics of a fully European Islam.

The project activities will consist of the study of the Islamic presence in Europe and of dissemination actions that, thanks also to the participation of lecturers and researchers, will disseminate the final results to a wide and non-academic audience.

ISMed ROLE: The project will involve the ISMed – CNR migration history group coordinated by Michele Colucci, both in the scientific committee and in carrying out some project initiatives related to the historical reconstruction of migratory movements.
