Summary

The project aims at studying the regulation and the modalities of the control of exchanges and transits across the maritime borders of the Mediterranean area, in a long-term historical perspective and in an interdisciplinary perspective, with the intention of historicizing a phenomenon that is still relevant. The objective of the Issm CNR unit is related to the reconstruction of the frontier in the contemporary age, especially from 1945 to today, with particular regard to the real frontiers and to the “immaterial” ones. In this sense, the research activity is divided into two main strands: the reconstruction of migration policies, state, local and international that contribute to redefine the border; the deepening of migration within the nation states, especially Italy, which determine the birth and reorganization of new “borders” even within the national territories. The focus is on historical research, but the involvement of demographers, sociologists, economists, linguists, anthropologists and geographers is expected. The other research units are: University of Palermo, University of Padua, University of Genoa.
