The CNR-ISMed at the International Conference DySES 2026

On June 18, 2026, Dr. Tommasina Pianese and Dr. Tiziana Volpe served as Chairs of the special session “From Adoption to Impact: AI and Smart Technologies Reshaping Service Organizations in Complex Socio-Economic Systems” at the international conference Dynamics of Socio-Economic Systems (DySES) 2026, co-organized by the University of Naples Parthenope and the University of Naples Federico II and held from June 18 to 20, 2026. Among the speakers, Dr. Monica Gambino presented the paper “Ocean Management as a Complex Socio-Ecological System: An Integrated Valuation Framework to Inform Marine Spatial Planning”, developed within the framework of the collaboration between ISMed’s Naples and Palermo offices.

The Mediterranean Studies District is launched in Naples

On 2 and 3 December, the Institute for Mediterranean Studies of the National Research Council (CNR-ISMed) promoted and organised an international conference entitled "Mediterranean or Mediterraneans?" at the Monumental Complex of Santa Maria La Nova. The conference was attended by numerous researchers and scholars from countries on the three shores of the Mediterranean, providing an opportunity for in-depth discussion on the challenges and dynamics that characterise the contemporary Mediterranean. During the conference, the "Mediterranean Studies District" was inaugurated, a hub that brings together the universities of Naples with the aim of ‘creating a system’ for research on the Mediterranean, which is still too divided and fragmented. The initiative symbolically promotes the city of Naples as a "bridge" between the three shores of the Mediterranean, emphasising the importance of shared scientific and cultural collaboration.

Applications are now open for the second edition of the "CNR Prize for Citizen Science: Guglielmo Marconi Library", the initiative that aims to enhance and support public engagement initiatives involving citizens and scientists in collaborative research activities. Applications are open until Monday 11 November to public or private research bodies (with registered offices in Italy) and non-profit organisations.

Second SISAm conference in September in collaboration with CNR-ISMed

From 26 to 28 September 2024, the second national conference of the Italian Society of Environmental History will be held in Naples at the Department of Humanistic Studies of the Federico II University (via Porta di Massa campus), entitled “Italian Environmental History from Ancient to Contemporary Times. Themes, sources and methods“, promoted and organised together with the Institute for Mediterranean Studies of the National Research Council.

Guido Dorso International Prize to Salvatore Capasso, DSU director

Under the patronage of the Senate of the Republic, the award ceremony of the prestigious "Guido Dorso" International Prize, now in its 45th edition, will be held in Naples on Monday 8 July. For the new section dedicated to the Mediterranean area, the Prize will be awarded to Professor Salvatore Capasso, director since 2023 of the Department of Human and Social Sciences, Cultural Heritage (CNR-DSU).

Archaeological investigations resume at the Roman Villa of Durrueli

Monday 3 June saw the start of the first excavation campaign at the Roman Villa in contrada Durrueli in Realmonte (Agrigento), conducted by the School of Specialisation in Archaeological Heritage, the National Research Council's Institutes for Cultural Heritage Sciences (CNR-ISPC, Catania branch) and Mediterranean Studies (CNR-ISMed, Naples), and the Archaeological Park of the Valley of the Temples, directed by Roberto Sciarratta.
