Oceanographic mission in the Mediterranean on the Gaia Blu ship with CNR-ISMed
Date:
3 July 2024

The CNR ship “Gaia Blu” left Naples on Saturday 29 June for an oceanographic mission in the Mediterranean in which the Institute for Mediterranean Studies (CNR-ISMed) is participating. The overall objective, as part of the TUNSIC-BANSIC 2024 scientific expedition, is to collect data and information to monitor the presence and reproduction of two marine species that are very present in the Mediterranean and heavily exploited by man: bluefin tuna and anchovies.
Researcher Marco Torri from CNR-ISMed will coordinate the scientific activities in the Ionian Sea, one of the most important breeding grounds for bluefin tuna in the Mediterranean. The data collected will also be fundamental in deepening our knowledge of the distribution of plankton meadows in that area and thus the habitat that favours the reproduction of this species. The spin-off of this research in terms of economic and environmental impact will be enormous, also because it will allow monitoring and projections on the reproduction and presence of this species in the Mediterranean, in favour of a sustainable economy and respect for the environment.
In addition to the Institute for Mediterranean Studies (CNR-ISMed), the following are taking part in the oceanographic mission, proposed by the Department of Human and Social Sciences, Cultural Heritage of the National Research Council (CNR-DSU): the Institute for Anthropogenic Impacts and Sustainability in the Marine Environment (CNR-IAS), the Institute for Marine Biological Resources and Biotechnology (CNR-IRBIM) and the Institute of Marine Sciences (CNR-ISMAR) of the CNR, the Anton Dohrn Zoological Station (SZN).
The mission will end on 20 July.
