From January 1, 2025, Gabriella Corona is the new Director of the Institute for Mediterranean Studies at the National Research Council (CNR-ISMed), succeeding Salvatore Capasso, currently Director of the Department of Humanities and Cultural Heritage (CNR-DSU). 

She is Research Director, Editor-in-Chief of the international scientific journal Global Environment: A Journal of Transdisciplinary History, and co-editor of the interdisciplinary journal Meridiana: Rivista di Storia e Scienze Sociali. Since 2021, she has been the Vice President of SISAm, the Italian Society for Environmental History. 

As a professor of Environmental History in the Historical Sciences program of the Department of Humanities at the University of Naples Federico II, Gabriella Corona has published extensively in national and international scientific journals, contributed essays to collective volumes, authored and edited several books. Her publications since 2000 include L’Italia dell’Antropocene: Percorsi di storia ambientale tra XX e XXI secolo (2023), A Short Environmental History in Italy (2017), Breve storia dell’ambiente in Italia (2015), The Problem of Waste Disposal in a Large European City and Rifiuti. Una questione non risolta (co-authored with Daniele Fortini, 2012 and 2010, respectively), and I ragazzi del piano. Napoli e le ragioni dell’ambientalismo urbano (2007). 

Her current research focuses on environmental history themes from both a national and global perspective. 

Gabriella Corona’s vision for CNR-ISMed is to strengthen the Institute’s leadership in interdisciplinary studies on the social, economic, and environmental dynamics of the Mediterranean. She aims to foster collaboration with academic and scientific institutions, particularly in partnership with countries in the southern and eastern Mediterranean.
