Tourism has long been recognized as a driving force for peace and conflict resolution, fostering intercultural understanding and cooperation among nations and cultures (D’Amore, 1988; Sharma et al., 2018). However, its impact is not always positive; irresponsible tourism development can exacerbate tensions between tourists and host communities (Tse & Tung, 2022) or even generate hostility (Kim & Prideaux, 2003).

The increasing visibility of global conflicts, social inequalities, and cultural divides calls for comprehensive research on how tourism can contribute to peacebuilding efforts. Understanding the dual nature of tourism—its potential to either harm or heal—is essential for cross-sector collaboration and innovative research methodologies. This is particularly relevant in the Mediterranean, one of the world’s most visited regions, where some areas experience instability and tensions, while others leverage tourism as a tool for reconciliation and social renewal (Causevic & Lynch, 2011). This complex reality necessitates a deeper analysis of tourism’s role in conflict resolution and societal reconciliation, positioning it as a key instrument for peacebuilding and sustainable territorial development.

Objectives of the Fifth Volume

As the relationship between tourism and peace gains increasing relevance in today’s world, the primary aim of this volume is to provide new insights and strategies on leveraging tourism as a peacebuilding tool.

This call for chapters seeks contributions that critically assess this topic, exploring both the limitations and potential of tourism in fostering intercultural dialogue and encouraging non-conflictual relationships between regions and communities. Interdisciplinary perspectives are particularly welcome, addressing tourism’s impact on conflict transformation, sustainable peace, and regional cooperation.

While submissions are not limited to specific topics, we particularly encourage original contributions on the following themes:

  • Tourism in the Context of Peacebuilding
  • New Models and Frameworks for Peace Through Tourism
  • Political Dimensions of Peace and Tourism
  • The Impact of Tourism on Decision-Making Processes in War and Peace
  • Sustainable Tourism as a Catalyst for Peace
