Book Series “Tourism Studies on the Mediterranean Region”

The book series “Tourism Studies on the Mediterranean Region”, edited by Mc-Graw Hill, is launched by the Institute of Studies on the Mediterranean (ISMed – CNR) with the ambitious goal to address the main research gaps currently present in tourism studies focused on the Mediterranean Region. This Region embraces countries with different cultures, religions, economies, and speed of development. Main challenges include migration crises, demographic pressures, sustainable development, water scarcity, desertification, excessive urbanization, food insecurity. In this respect, tourism is a sector that can support a more balanced development of all Mediterranean countries. Indeed, if adequately planned and managed, tourism is able to generate positive impacts on the economy, culture, and society as well as to enhance differences and strengthen common elements, so as to creating a positive balance between a positive fragmentation and a strong connection and avoiding the marginalization of the less developed areas.

Although the scientific community and stakeholders recognize the key role of tourism in the development of Mediterranean countries, a clear understanding of the peculiarities, strengths and weaknesses of this sector in the Region is still missing.

The book series “Tourism Studies on the Mediterranean Region” proposes an integrated analysis of how geopolitical, socio-economic and cultural variables interact with tourism activities in the Mediterranean region. The series evaluates policies and measures to boost tourism economies and promote the sector’s structural transformation towards environmental, socio-economic and cultural sustainability. Through innovative contributions, the series aims to lay solid foundations to existing theory and develop new empirical analyses patterns. The objective is to provide guidelines for future programs and policies to face the challenges ahead and reduce the economic, social and cultural gaps persisting between the countries in the Area.

A new volume of the book series will be launched on an annual basis with a specific topic. Each volume is intended as a collection of original essays jointly written by academics and experts in the field of tourism that are interested or operate in the Mediterranean region. The series will offer several original features. In particular, it will integrate the innovative collection and analysis of descriptive data and statistics with solid theory on the issue. The series aims to attract a high number of scholars in the field and intends to provide the grounds for a multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary dialogue among academics and practitioners.

The book series is edited by Piera Buonincontri, Luisa Errichiello, and Roberto Micera, three senior researchers by CNR-ISMed, who can be supported by guest editors experts in the peculiar topic to which the annual volume is addressed.

The Scientific Committee includes scholars of international reputation and from different Mediterranean countries.

The first volume of the book series focused on the sustainable development of tourism in the Mediterranean countries to foster the recovery of the sector following the deep crisis due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The topic was addressed through 14 contributions, coming from numerous Mediterranean countries and offering multidisciplinary approaches and different theoretical and empirical perspectives that can shed light on such a topical issue.

The second volume was co-edited with guest editor Prof. Giacomo Del Chiappa (University of Sassari and CNR-ISMed). Published in December 2022, the volume analyzes how Technology 4.0 influences the dynamics of the tourism sector and the behaviors of operators and those of tourists considering, also, the paradigm shift that the birth and development of the metaverse is generating. The volume brings together 11 innovative researches with a theoretical-empirical slant, developed according to an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approach and a source of useful managerial reflections for all those who - as policy makers, destination managers and supply chain operators - are interested in understanding how Technology 4.0 can support the competitiveness of their organizations.

In 2022, the Book Series received the patronage by ENIT-Italian National Tourism Agency.

Both the volumes of the Tourism Studies on the Mediterranean Region book series were presented at TTG in Rimini, through two conferences attended by the editors of the series, some of the authors, as well as academics and operators in the tourism sector, which allowed to create a space for dialogue and discussion on the topics of the volumes.
