Logistics and freight transportation are essential for the economic development of a country, but at the same time, they produce harmful externalities for the environment and human health, mainly due to the significant contribution these activities make to harmful emissions. In this context, it is necessary for companies to implement decisive strategies to decarbonize their activities throughout the entire supply chain. “Sustainable logistics” is considered one of the most important levers for managing the supply chain sustainably. However, the results of previous research show that in Italy, sustainable logistics has limited diffusion with a low propensity towards the adoption of sustainability programs by Italian companies, particularly those providing transportation and freight logistics services. Faced with this scenario, the Sustainable Logistics Laboratory of CNR-ISMed conducts research aimed at increasing awareness of the importance of sustainability in the sector and disseminating the culture of sustainable logistics to address the challenges posed by climate change. The seminar aims to provide an updated overview of research activities carried out in the field of decarbonizing freight logistics, frame the results obtained in relation to existing literature, and identify future research trajectories.

THE SPEAKER. Pietro Evangelista is a Research Manager in Logistics and SCM at CNR-ISMed in Naples. Pietro is a business economist and obtained a PhD in logistics and SCM from Heriot-Watt University (UK). He has conducted extensive research in the field of freight logistics management. Research topics addressed have included innovation in the maritime-port sector and the spread of ICT in logistics. More recently, he has focused on the study of decarbonization strategies for freight transport, digitalization and sustainability in the supply chain, and sustainability and resilience in urban logistics. The results of his research have led to more than 150 publications. He teaches Green Logistics at LUT University (Finland) and the Université de Pau et des Pays de l’Adour (France). He is a member of the research committee of the European Association of Logistics and a member of the scientific committee of many high-ranked international journals.
