The definition of the Mediterranean Sea is based on a single universally accepted parameter: it is a sea that laps three continents. This strategic location has fostered cultural and commercial exchange among the surrounding countries, influencing Mediterranean history and society over the millennia.
Although several efforts have been made to identify a distinctive criterion in the categorization of “Mediterranean country,” there currently remains a lack of unambiguity in defining the boundaries of the Mediterranean region. The complexity in delimiting and defining the regions that make up the Mediterranean area is evident, as a wide range of elements contribute to the intricacy of this task. In addition to geographical and orographic features, cultural, economic, historical and ecological factors, including those related to flora and fauna, can affect the configuration of the region. Political tensions, historical issues and economic dynamics add additional variables that complicate the Mediterranean situation.
