Profile

Marina Montacutelli trained at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa, at the Istituto Italiano per gli Studi Storici and at the EHESS in Paris. His research activity focused on the Mediterranean area, investigated in the continuous definition and redefinition of its borders in ancient times, specifying cultural, religious, economic and political milieux; on the other hand, on the category “identity” in which the analysis of the links between state, politics and economies has allowed to better clarify in scientific terms the mobility, to scan and determine the category by circumscribing the heuristic validity, to highlight – grasping the historical determinants – cases of intellectual construction and to show the periodization. This is the case of the history and historiography of the Republic of Genoa and of the interrelations between the Republic of Genoa and the Kingdom of Naples in the years in which the siglo de los genoveses began and consolidated, upsetting economic relations and the Mediterranean and European balances.

In the first case, the research and the activity focused on the historical-cultural processes that have consolidated “boundaries of civilization” and on their identification, on their role in the formation of European culture as a strong element for the definition of belonging and exclusion, on their function in the European identity process. In the second, the periodisation and typology of the “century of the Genoese” was investigated in particular, as well as the rise of the Republic of Genoa and its hombres de negocios to an importance among the economic hierarchies of the European world-economy, the expansion of the dimensions and economic scope of that system, and the paradigmatic value – also in comparison and difference (with the United Provinces and Holland in particular) – of the Magnificent’s experience. More recently, he has been interested, also by comparison, in the institutional profiles, the milieuxintellectuals and the political dynamics that have made possible such, and so widespread in time and space, hegemony, as well as the institutions of research and higher education that in the long run allowed the reproduction of the elites in a common ground of European “scale”.

With her work on Emilio Sereni and Manlio Rossi-Doria, she also committed herself to trying to understand the role of agriculture and of the territorial structures and their transformations in the history of Italy, as well as that of the South emerging from the negative exceptionalism and finding herself, in an analytical way, rather in the differences, in the mobile hierarchies, in the unstable spaces, in the historical dimension. In this sense, also the collaboration with the Southern Institute of History and Social Sciences (IMES) – which contributed to found, as well as the magazine “Storica” – and with the magazine “Meridiana”, of which it was part. He is also a member of the board of professors of the Doctorate in History and Philosophical and Social Sciences of the University of Rome Tor Vergata and SISEM. The research and the results achieved have been presented in various national and international seminars and public conferences, essays, also popular ones, and working papers.
