Home-based work has been the subject of limited interest by the scientific community. Often considered marginal within capitalist development or limitedly analyzed in relation to the contingencies of the business cycle, it has instead proved resilient to the succession of three industrial revolutions. In the present day, on a global scale, home-based work endures, adapting to the needs of production and technological change, employing mainly female labor. In its unfolding it re-proposes the structural issues affecting the home-employed workforce, converging on the timing and modes of work performance and psycho-physical conditions. The examination of the Italian case is particularly interesting, because of the spread that this form of production has experienced in the twentieth century and the connections it has with patriarchal culture, the structure of the manufacturing system and the processes of division of labor on a global scale. The analysis is functional in thematizing the working conditions of those who today by choice or necessity carry out paid work within their homes in occupations with intellectual content.
