The crisis to which tourism has been subjected in recent years due to the covid-19 pandemic and the current wars has brought about significant changes in the sector. These include the awareness, on the part of destinations and operators, as well as tourists and visitors, of the need to create a culture of territories in which there is a more balanced relationship between tourism development and environmental sustainability.
From the point of view of demand, the aspect of sustainability is gaining prominence in the decision-making process of individuals who, thanks to an increased sensitivity on the issue, are increasingly leaning towards accommodation facilities, destinations and tourist activities that are sensitive to environmental protection and prefer to enjoy outdoor experiences and in contact with nature, far from large cities and crowded attractions (Del Chiappa, 2018; Gursoy et al., 2020). In particular, environmental certifications are acquiring an increasingly relevant role, as instruments able to assure the market of the tourism operators’ effective attention to the environment.
Starting from these considerations, the aim of the meeting is to analyse and highlight attitudes towards environmental sustainability, both from the demand point of view, highlighting the preferences and choices of tourists, and from the supply point of view, in order to understand what are the levers that push tourism managers to promote a more balanced and responsible development model.
