In the aftermath of the decolonisation processes in West Africa and Nigeria’s independence, the Niger Delta, rich in subsoil hydrocarbons, was the site of widespread mining operations by international oil companies. As has been subsequently documented, the implementation of extensive crude oil extraction operations has strongly impacted the territory from an environmental point of view and radically changed the local economic and social situation. By retracing the main stages of the entrenchment of the oil companies’ presence in the Niger Delta, the seminar proposes a specific focus on the emigrations linked to the consequences of the extraction activity in the area.
