The reclamation of marshy areas has had a profound impact on the landscape of many Italian regions, transforming their natural and settlement structures. The topics covered in this volume encourage a stratigraphic reading of the evolution of the landscape of the Sibari Plain in Calabria. The multi- and intra-disciplinary approach allows us to understand how the landscape has been shaped not only by the incessant action of nature, but also by the constant intervention of man, who over time has transformed it according to his own needs.
Only apparently rooted in a local dimension, “Terre di bonifica” highlights the centrality of the Italian rural landscape in relation to cultural, social, environmental and productive issues. The contributions offer a detailed, albeit non-exhaustive, overview that interprets the tangible and intangible signs of the territory, breaks down the anthropic and natural frameworks, and reveals the complexity and intrinsic meaning of the places.
THE SPEAKER. Giuseppe Tagarelli, who holds a degree in Natural Sciences and a PhD in Anthropology, is a researcher at the National Research Council’s Institute for Mediterranean Studies. Formerly a lecturer at the University of Messina and the Mater Boni Consilii University in Tirana, his scientific interests focus on the study of landscape, ethnobotany and biodemography.
