Protecting portions of the natural environment from degradation caused by human activity. This was the need that motivated the founders of the first US reserves and continues to motivate those who fight to establish protected areas. However, over time, other goals have been added to this one: the promotion of scientific research, the encouragement and support of widespread but respectful tourism, environmental education and, more recently, the sustainable development of local communities.
Luigi Piccioni recounts a long history of conservation, battles, disappointments, new beginnings, and profound cultural and political changes that have transformed the face of protected areas in Italy and the way they operate, making them increasingly complex and multifaceted.
THE SPEAKER. Luigi Piccioni, historian and activist, teaches Economic History at the University of Calabria; he is vice-president of the Italian Society of Wildlife History and coordinates the editorial staff of “Altronovecento”. His books include: «Primo di cordata.
