Rome, June 15, 2025 – In episode no. 69 of Scritto, letto, detto, journalist Giovanni Paolo Fontana interviews Stefano Gallo, first researcher at CNR-ISMed and author of the book Primo maggio (Il Mulino, 2025).
During the meeting, Gallo helps us understand the profound meaning of May Day, in the forms and many evolutions of the world of work in our time, through a broad overview of the focus on work from the second half of the 19th century to today. Over time, work, thanks to workers’ and trade union associations, has become an instrument of collective emancipation and construction of social identity.
Through the tools of history, Gallo traces a path from the birth of Workers’ Day to its present day, highlighting how those original principles remain central, in the transformations that no longer celebrate a past, in which there is a process of appropriation of the date of 1 May by the popular strata of Europe and the world. It becomes a moment in which the working class does not celebrate a past, but imagines its future.
