The event, organised by the Department of Human, Social and Cultural Heritage Sciences (CNR-DSU) in collaboration with the Institute for Mediterranean Studies (CNR-ISMed), is an opportunity to enrich the debate in the sector, offering an open space for discussion and facilitating direct collaborations between researchers, managers, representatives of international organisations and trade associations. More than 80 leading European experts will speak at the conference.

Several factors are putting European fisheries under attack: the loss of fishing grounds due to the development of offshore renewable energies, the effects of global warming and other environmental factors on the distribution of fish populations, and the lack of generational turnover. At the same time, aquaculture continues its global growth trend, although it faces constraints imposed by EU regulations. These pressures continue to awaken new interest in the portfolio of solutions that the economy offers to policy makers, managers and all those directly and indirectly involved in fisheries and aquaculture.

The topics covered during the EAFE conference range from the challenges of the Common Fisheries Policy in the exploitation and management of shared stocks, to those arising from decarbonisation and marine spatial planning, to economic opportunities related to biodiversity, sustainable value chains and the use of digital technologies to improve fisheries management and control. A workshop on seafood processing will cover topics such as changes in the availability of raw materials due to global trade, political conflicts, trade barriers and labour availability.

This year the conference reintroduced the Policy Day, an event coordinated by the Economic Unit of the EU’s Directorate General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE). The session, entitled “The Economic Future of Fisheries: Resilience to the Effects of Climate Change and Innovation for Achieving the SDGs”, will be moderated by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). The conference will be attended by representatives from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the Association of National Organisations of Fishing Enterprises of the European Union (Europêche), the Sea Federation and ASSOITTICA ITALIA.
