Through the presentation of the case study “Embedded in poverty and informality: the effects of environmental migration on women in urban settlements in Windhoek” the Constructivist Grounded theory methodology approach will be illustrated using the results of the completed research. The methodology is based on the ontological principle of reality emerging from the data, with the researcher acting as a neutral observer and using an objectivist epistemology.
What emerges clearly from the case study participants’ accounts is the difficulty of immediately associating climate change with the reason why they leave the village and head for the urban area. The correlation between climate change and migration cannot therefore be lucidly identified in the narratives of the interviewees. Climate change is probably a contributing cause but not the main reason for the decision to move.
THE SPEAKER. Bruno Venditto is first researcher at the Institute for Mediterranean Studies (ISMed, CNR). He holds a degree in Maritime Economics from the Naval University Institute of Naples, a Master’s degree in Economics and Social Studies from the University of Manchester (UK) and a PhD in Sociology from the University of Namibia.
Interested in socio-economic development issues, his studies emphasise the contribution of migration, considered a human right, to development. Recently, his research interests have expanded to understand the correlation between human mobility, urbanisation and climate change, with a focus on the most vulnerable, using the lens of intersectionality to describe how systems of inequality based on gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity and other forms of discrimination “intersect” to create unique dynamics and effects.
