The book is the result of a wide-ranging study on the 1980 earthquake, which the author conducted with an in-depth analysis over a long period of time and through a direct approach with the affected communities, the protagonists involved at different times, documents and data from public and private bodies. In this way, the unprecedented perspective of those who experienced the catastrophe and its consequences first-hand is restored: from local administrators to inhabitants, from popular committees to entrepreneurs and members of the commissions in charge of monitoring the reconstruction phase, exploring dimensions often neglected in the literature on the subject.

In line with the most recent research on the subject, the approach offers analytical reflections that challenge the public narrative of the earthquake, which is often limited to and focused on the negative aspects, at many points. The 1980s earthquake thus reveals the social and political complexity of the affected communities, which can greatly enrich the analytical framework in the study of natural disasters.
