Recovered in hundreds of fragments at different times in the history of Herculaneum’s excavations since 1739, the quadriga has remained mainly relegated to museum storage, without it ever having been possible to achieve a satisfactory archaeological reconstruction of it, let alone a real recomposition.

Thanks to an agreement with the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, the CNR-ISMed has resumed its study, in a path between research and innovation in which, alongside historical-archaeological research, hundreds of fragments identified in the museum’s deposits have been surveyed and analysed using photogrammetry and 3D modelling. The reconstructive proposal was based on the integration of all the information offered by archaeological evidence, historical sources and ancient iconographic documentation, verified through the potential of digital restoration.

And precisely through the digital recomposition of the video produced with the MANN by CNR-ISMed, visitors will finally be able to observe the triumphal chariot in its structural and figurative components, as well as its overall appearance. A monument of exceptional importance is thus handed back to scholars and the public, which, although lacunose, is for the first time legible and usable in a unified manner in its technical, artistic and historical aspects, enriching our knowledge of monumental bronze sculpture of the Roman age with documentation of exceptional importance.
