What role can historical research play in counteracting the loss of biodiversity, particularly that cultivated in the fields? What is the space for historical studies in public administration?
In Italy there is a law to protect biodiversity of agricultural and food interest (194/2015) and almost every region has a regulation for the conservation of native animal and plant resources at risk of genetic erosion. In order to admit a variety or breed into the protection registers, it is essential that its link to the territory and in some cases “autochthony” is documented. In this context, historical research is of great importance in meeting public service requirements. There remains, however, the need to remain faithful to the restitution of the complexity that holds together environmental contexts, communities and individual resources, knowing how to orient oneself, from time to time, in a multiplicity of sources, in constant comparison with experts from other disciplines.
THE SPEAKER. Valentina Iacoponi is a Phd in Contemporary History. Her interests revolve around the history of the countryside, between work, landscape and migratory movements. The author of essays and two monographs, she is currently working on historical reports for the application of Lazio Region Law 15/2000 for the protection of agricultural biodiversity.
