The proverb that comes from Latin ‘Sine pecunia ne cantantur missae’ means that without economic means one does not live a dignified life, but one full of limitations and lacking freedom. Even the priest will not sing mass if he does not have the money to pay for it.

In Naples, at a certain point in its history, the sacred (masses) and the profane (money) meet, as the research of Paola Avallone and Raffaella Salvemini, researchers in economic history at CNR-ISMed, has ‘met’. The two scholars will recount a unique page in the economic history of pre-welfare Southern Italy, namely the difficult relationship between assistance and credit, from which sprang a complex and articulated banking system unique in the world that led to the Banco di Napoli. From the care of the body and soul that attracted legacies and donations to support churches, conservatories, hospitals and churches, some dating back to the 13th century such as Sant’Eligio, came the creation of financial and banking circuits with the birth of a paper currency such as the credit faith.
