Cultural Heritage in Construction
From Collective Memory to Cultural Heritage
26 October 2023 3-6 p.m.

Humanities Centre (6th floor)
Via card. G. Sanfelice, 8
Naples
Through diversified approaches, the seminar dwells on issues related to the creation of collective memory, recounting the recovery activities of the Bagnoli ltalsider Archive and the case of the Spanish Civil War, until addressing – thanks to testimonies and success stories – the emerging role in the definition and formation of new patrimonial contents of immigrant communities and in particular of second generations.
These new heritages and oral memories, forms of contamination and hybridisation appear to be continuously nourished by the connection with the countries of origin, where memory is not seen as a sum of memories to be ‘dusted off’ and used but as a taut thread of history, a challenge that shakes for change and, at the same time, a moment of strong solidarity and cohesion between generations, which in recent decades, on several occasions, have shown themselves to be poorly connected, almost ‘frayed’.
Memory, therefore, as a moment of revisiting, even critically, collective expectations, elaborations and achievements, in order to bring to light a rich cultural heritage, thus offering possibilities to interpret and question the past in view of the present and a sustainable future.
The meeting is part of the cycle of seminars Cultural Heritage in transition | Cultural Heritage in Transition, organised within the COST project Underground Built Heritage as Catalyser for Community Valorisation, aimed at the promotion and valorisation of underground built heritage as a driver of sustainable development and empowerment for local communities.
