Conference

A world behind closed doors?
Immigration and restrictive policies, 1924-2024

28 October 2024 9:30 a.m. – 4:45 p.m.

Enzo Tortora Library
Meeting Room
Via Nicola Zabaglia 27/B
Rome

In 1924, one hundred years ago, the Quota Act was passed in the USA, a law that has gone down in history as one of the most impressive immigration restriction measures. The Italian immigration world, which had been projected towards the USA for decades, suffered the most, but its consequences resonated globally.

A century later, we intend to analytically retrace the main historical experiences of immigration closures, with particular attention to the Italian case, starting from 1924 to the present day. The aim is to reconstruct the origins and forms of application of the measures, while investigating the strategies adopted to limit their effects by social actors, also assessing their impact in different historical contexts.

The day is open to contributions from scholars and scholars of history, law, social sciences, legal practitioners, and the world of activism.
