There is no doubt that the direct consequences of the Russo-Ukrainian war are the loss of life and the humanitarian crisis associated with huge numbers of people under siege or forced migration. However, the Ukrainian conflict also entailed huge socio-economic consequences for the whole world and in particular for Europe and the Mediterranean countries.
The workshop is a satellite event of the LIX Scientific Meeting of the Italian Society of Economics Demography and Statistics of SIEDS on the economic and social aspects of demographic ageing (25-26 May 2023) and focuses on the 2023 edition of the CNR-ISMed report (Mediterranean Economies 2023). The aim is to investigate the impact of current events by analysing the geopolitical situation in the area where, in addition to the persistence of conflicts of various kinds, the overlapping challenges of post-pandemic recovery, energy transition and the international repercussions of the conflict in Ukraine are of concern. During the event, the consequences of this further unpredictable shock on the Med Area’s economic growth prospects will be assessed, hypothesising long-term scenarios of rebalancing production systems.
