The 2024 edition of the series explores the issues at the heart of the European Union’s “New Agenda for the Mediterranean”, a strategic programme aimed at strengthening cooperation with the countries on the southern shore of the Mediterranean for sustainable development. The analysis focuses on five key pillars of the Agenda: human development, governance, resilience and prosperity, peace and security, migration and mobility, and green transition.

Through contributions from experts, the book examines the main critical issues in the Mediterranean region. Among the topics covered are the geopolitical consequences of the October 2023 Middle East crisis, the growing role of Russia and China in the region, and infrastructure investments in MENA and Africa, in the context of the competition between G7 and BRICS. It highlights the urgency of addressing crucial issues such as environmental degradation, water scarcity and gender inequalities, while analysing the complex relationships between migration policies and economic growth. In the face of environmental pressures, socio-economic inequalities and political instability, the book emphasises the need for innovative strategies and greater regional integration to transform these challenges into opportunities for growth and development, with critical analyses and concrete recommendations addressed to policy makers, academics and stakeholders.
