In the context of a Mediterranean increasingly exposed to climate change, the seminar analyses the ecological relationships between small and large pelagic species, with particular attention to recruitment dynamics and the state of biological resources. The meeting will review a line of research developed over the years on ichthyoplankton and oceanographic campaigns conducted in the central Mediterranean by the CNR. The SevenS project frames the most recent developments, extended to the study of juvenile and adult stages, with a view to integrated resource assessment and dialogue with other disciplines, including the humanities. Finally, a section is dedicated to bluefin tuna, starting with recent campaigns aboard the Gaia Blu, with a focus on larval ecology, international methodological standardisation (ICCAT-GBYP), genetic tools and new fishery-independent indices. In closing, an overview of ongoing projects and new European initiatives dedicated to marine resource research is presented.

THE SPEAKER. Marco Torri works in the field of sustainable management of marine biological resources, with a particular focus on small pelagic species. His research focuses on analysing the effects of environmental variables, climate change and anthropogenic pressure on recruitment, a crucial phase that determines the structure and availability of the adult population, with direct repercussions on the economy and social fabric linked to fishing. He currently coordinates an international research project aimed at developing new biomass indices based on larval abundance, understood as a proxy for reproductive success and the biomass of reproductive stocks. The approach integrates ecology, oceanography and population dynamics, with the aim of providing useful tools for the sustainable management of resources and support for conservation policies.
