Once a fertile oasis, Gaza is now an enclosure of rubble and pain. Its history is crucial to understanding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the dynamics of political balance in the Middle East. Yet its history is not only one of tragedy: Gaza is also the birthplace of experiences of non-violence, dialogue, tolerance and challenge to patriarchy; it has been inhabited by everyday life, by people who resist and imagine the future. Arturo Marzano reconstructs the history of the Strip from the late 19th century to the present day, going beyond prejudices and ideological simplifications. Gaza cannot be identified exclusively with desolation and destruction.
The volume is presented by Michele Colucci, historian and senior researcher at ISMed.
