The dramatic challenges posed by climate change must be addressed at all levels. This study analyses the role that technological change and public innovation policies can play in promoting energy transition.

The dynamics of energy transition are investigated using a dynamic input-output macroeconomic model of the global economy. The model includes a production network composed of 27 sectors, distinguishing between key sectors of mining, manufacturing, services and electricity. Each sector invests in distinct capital goods based on specific needs by sector and type of capital. All parameters related to production technologies reflect real relationships and are derived from empirical data.

Energy transition pathways are implemented by modelling and calibrating several parallel processes: (i) the growing share of total electricity generated by green utilities; (ii) the electrification of production techniques and household consumption.

THE SPEAKER. After obtaining a master’s degree in economics and finance from Goethe University Frankfurt, Mattia Pettena went on to earn a master’s degree in economic policy from Sorbonne Paris Nord University and a PhD in management engineering from the University of Genoa. His research interests focus on the development of dynamic macroeconomic models and, in particular, on the hybridisation of different heterodox methodologies.
