Peace: the viewpoint of science

Friday December 20, 9:00 a.m. – 5:40 p.m.

National Research Council
Piazzale Aldo Moro, 7
Conference Hall
Rome

The dramatic current events in which we are immersed, the result of the growing imbalance in international geopolitical relations, the surprising precipitation into war scenarios on our own continent, have forcefully re-proposed a series of questions in the scientific community regarding its own role and the role of science in peace processes.

Both the Science and Dialogue for Peace Laboratory and the CNR DSU Council have decided, interpreting the urging of many researchers, to reinterpret their own studies and research in order to cross-fertilize and deepen issues related to the concepts of peace and conflict.

On the basis of these considerations, the CNR DSU study day aims to make an intellectual, cultural and practical contribution to the country in order to increase understanding of conflict and the precursors of peace and dialogue.

The day will therefore be about dialogue, sharing, awareness.

Researchers and scholars, teachers and students will bring their contribution to address with the audience the different topics related to the culture of peace.

The concept of peace, individual and social peace; the concept of conflict; inequalities and stereotypes; education and culture of peace; the economics of peace and the economics of war; economic transformations as precursors of conflicts or their overcoming will be discussed; the role of technologies and AI in conflict management; cultural heritage in war contexts; the preservation of intangible cultures; scientific research in countries at war; Mediation and Negotiation in International Conflicts; the role of religions in conflicts; Ethnic Conflicts and Human Rights.

Gathering ideas on the various historical, economic, legal, psychological, philosophical, linguistic, political, sociological, cognitive and cultural heritage dimensions on the same day can be an important step of clarification and usefulness for the whole community.

The event will be opened by CNR President Maria Chiara Carrozza and CNR DSU Director Salvatore Capasso.

The meeting will be moderated by Rino Falcone (CNR ISTC) and Adriana Valente (CNR IRPPS)

There will be a screening of short films on the day’s theme provided by Amnesty International as well as productions by CNR researchers.
