Squeezed between the dramatic materiality of wars and climate change, it may seem alienating to talk about narratives; yet the socio-ecological crisis has much to do with the ways in which we narrate the world, the past and possible futures. We need to construct rebellious narratives and insurgent archives that lay siege to official history and liberate imaginaries and memories. Every environmental conflict is also a narrative conflict, a challenge to official narratives that want to silence or normalise injustice. Every environmental conflict is a barricade made of stories, memories, bodies and imaginaries that resist biological and cultural contamination, the extinction of collective dreams, the domestication of desires and memories. Every environmental conflict is a portal opening onto the past and the future, to tell forgotten stories of oppression and resistance, but also to imagine liberated futures.
Naples and Campania have been an open-air laboratory where the oppression of environmental contamination has become fertile ground for developing alternative narratives and resistant practices. Art, music, scientific research and literature have intertwined with the struggles against contamination, producing a myriad of experiments. There is, therefore, no better place than Naples to host a festival such as this.
