This issue of Meridiana: rivista di storia e scienze sociali (Viella Editrice) proposes a set of scientific contributions dedicated to the recent evolution of Basilicata, between history and social sciences. It deals with the post-war period, with the effects of the agrarian reform and the Cassa del Mezzogiono, the industrial development in the following decades, the role of the ruling classes, up to close and topical issues such as the impact of oil extraction and the spread of wind power plants.

The authors’ aim is to understand the characteristics and contradictions inherent in the modernisation of the region, going beyond stereotyped visions that have affected both the imagination and the scientific understanding of social and economic dynamics.
