Told in terms of a “miracle”, the development process that affected Italy in the first decades after World War II is striking in its intensity and rapidity: in the span of a few years, a productive system of advanced capitalism was structured in the peninsula. Much has been written about the limits and contradictions of that transformation, but a comprehensive look at the environmental impacts it caused has yet to emerge. A number of monographic studies have examined specific cases and aspects; a few attempts at synthesis have outlined interpretative schemes and proposed undoubtedly useful lines of research. And yet an environmental history of Italy’s “glorious thirty” remains unfinished.

But on the basis of what sources and approaches would it be possible? And who would be its protagonists, what trend lines and dynamics would they have given rise to? Without any claim to exhaustiveness, the seminar aims to offer a reflection on these and other questions in an attempt to contribute to a unified reading of a crucial phase in the history of Italy.

THE SPEAKER. Salvatore Romeo is a researcher in contemporary history at the University of Rome Tor Vergata. His prevailing interests include environmental history, industrial history and urban history. He is the author of “Steel in Smoke. L’Ilva di Taranto dal 1945 ad oggi” (Donzelli 2019), winner of the ANCI-SISSCO 2020 award.
