Presentation of the book: Il coordinamento impossibile. Tecnocrazia, amministrazione pubblica e regionalismo nell’intervento per lo sviluppo del Mezzogiorno (1943-2013), by Melania Nucifora. Franco Angeli editions, 2021
The book examines, in a long-term perspective that goes from the origins of the Cassa del Mezzogiorno to the new Community-based programming, launched at the turn of the 1990s and the first decade of the 2000s, the trajectory of public intervention for the Mezzogiorno, reconstructing some key passages around three strands: the physiognomy and functioning of the technical bureaucracies in charge of programming and implementing the intervention, the impact of the regionalisation process on regional development policies and the technical-disciplinary roots of the expert knowledge mobilised.
AUTHOR. Melania Nucifora PhD in Histoire et civilisation at the Centre de Recherches Historiques of the Ecole de Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (CRH-EHESS, Paris), is now associate professor of Contemporary History at the Department of Humanities of the University of Catania (DISUM). Her research focuses on the history of community policies, regionalism and municipalism, decentralisation, urban and environmental history and processes of patrimonialisation, from a European comparative perspective. His monographic works deal with the relationship between technical bureaucracies, expert knowledge and politics between the liberal and republican ages and concern urban government, conflicts between development and landscape and environmental protection, and national and community policies for the Mezzogiorno. A former regional representative for Italy on the board of the European Society for Environmental History (ESEH) (http://eseh.org/), he is currently a member of the national board of SISAm (Italian Society for Environmental History).
