This book crystallises the fruitful outcome of the ever-needed collaboration between society and academic institutions, with knowledge transfer aimed at generating new value in the economic and social spheres of local and regional communities. The generous collaboration with the Municipality of La Unión made possible the preparation of a volume that brings together a series of studies and contributions resulting from the participation of experts, academics and technicians in the European COST Action CA18110 project ‘Underground Built Heritage as catalyser for Community Valorisation’. In La Unión, the Parque Minero and the Festival Internacional del Cante de la Minas were excellent cases to study the good practices developed that made them success stories. but also to analyse the social, economic and financial obstacles that still stand in the way of the project’s realisation, and in particular the economic and financial barriers that still exist to achieving optimal local community development. The book offers a multifaceted approach to the complex reality of this ancient enclave, whose history has always been linked to the exploitation of underground minerals.
