È professore di economia presso l'Illinois State University. Fa parte dei comitati editoriali di diverse riviste economiche ed è autore di due libri. Nel corso del tempo, ha ricoperto incarichi presso l'Indian Institute of Management, ZEW, Bank of Finland, Tata Energy Research Institute e Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Da gennaio 2018, Rajeev K. Goel è membro dell'area di ricerca "Innovazione e concorrenza internazionale" del Kiel Institute for the World Economy.

I suoi interessi di ricerca riguardano l'economia pubblica, l'economia del cambiamento tecnologico e la microeconomia applicata. Presso l'Istituto di Kiel partecipa al progetto "Knowledge Creation and Growth in Emerging Economies", dove contribuirà in particolare con la sua esperienza sul trasferimento internazionale di conoscenze e tecnologie.
