flyer and Programme

In recent decades, different historiographies have approached the study of kingship with different angles and perspectives. The condition or status of the queen and the participation of women in the management of monarchical power have led to a renewed interest in issues related to the political, economic and cultural manifestations of the monarchies of Mediterranean Europe between the Middle Ages and the modern age.

The seminar proposes to deepen the relevance of the forms and languages of power of the ruling dynasties with particular attention to the figure of the queen, understood not only as the wife of the king but as the protagonist of the authority conquered or received through an analysis of the basis of female power. Through the use of different sources and methodologies, the proposal will revolve around the enhancement of those elements that allow us to detect the particular aversion to queens, but also to appreciate those features that bring us closer to the self-awareness of their position in the economic and judicial spheres. In this sense, it will be essential to reveal, for example, the characteristics of their performance in the public life of the kingdom, dwelling on the character of the testimonies that relate this participation, but also on the observation of other elements that define the character of the sovereign.

The program is organized in a morning section, dedicated to the lecturers' speeches and a visit to the State Archives of Naples, where documentary funds related to the theme of the seminar are preserved; and an afternoon section, reserved for the presentations of the young scholars' research (20-minute speeches), followed by shared discussion.
The lectures will be held in presence in Italian, French, English and Spanish. In order to facilitate communication among participants, both lecturers' and fellows' interventions will be presented with a power point in a language different from the language of the presentation.
