The Mediterranean is an area of opportunity for growth and development for all the countries bordering it. The future of Italy, which crosses its waters, depends on it in a strategic way. If the great differentials with respect to socio-economic and demographic aggregates between the different shores of this sea can generate conflicts, the same constitute vital energies capable of nourishing structural changes and virtuous processes of growth. It is therefore necessary - and rightly so - to channel these energies into a system through effective economic and social policies of lasting impact, for which interdisciplinary research and analysis is fundamental.

The CNR, committed in this direction, has been investing resources in socio-economic research for years in support of policy makers for the development of the Mediterranean area. The opening of the Palermo headquarters of the Institute for Mediterranean Studies (CNR-ISMed) in cooperation with LUMSA represents a further step. The collaboration between LUMSA and CNR on issues such as history, environment, economic growth, sustainable development and migration will generate synergies and research opportunities, helping to strengthen competitiveness in science and academia by increasing knowledge as an essential tool for the development of the area.

The event is part of the celebrations of the 80th anniversary of the founding of LUMSA University
