The thematic seminar aims to discuss how heritage – rural, landscape or industrial – can become a lever for local development through tourism, and what mechanisms make this transformation effective and sustainable. Starting from two different Italian cases, the seminar proposes a comparison between “top-down” enhancement strategies, based on institutional recognition and certification processes (UNESCO inscription), and “bottom-up” strategies, based on collective memory, narratives and urban and territorial regeneration practices.
The aim is to focus on the conditions, actors and trajectories of tourism impact: how an international “label” or a heritage preservation project can increase the attractiveness of a place; how tourist flows translate (or do not translate) into economic benefits and new productive specialisations; and how enhancement programmes can contribute to social cohesion, reuse of spaces and responsible development. The comparison between the two interventions will therefore offer a joint reflection on tourism, heritage and sustainable development, between measuring effects and constructing new territorial imaginaries.
