For many years now, public debate has been plagued by heated controversy over migration policies. The choices made by governments on migration are the subject of constant clashes and accusations between different political camps. In this field, however, perhaps even more than in others, the impression is that there is a lot of controversy but very little knowledge. The meeting will attempt to focus on a fundamental question: what are migration policies really? The research hypothesis is that the scope of these policies is not limited to defining the bureaucratic constraints imposed on the lives of people who intend to migrate from one country to another, but encompasses something much broader.
THE SPEAKER. Stefano Gallo is a senior researcher at the Institute of Mediterranean Studies of the National Research Council (Rome branch) and scientific director of the Franco Serantini Library in Pisa. He specialises in the social history of contemporary Italy, with his main fields of research being the history of migration and the history of labour. His latest books are Primo Maggio (il Mulino 2025), La Resistenza nel Volterrano (1943-1944) (BFS, 2024) and Storia del lavoro nell’Italia contemporanea (il Mulino 2023, with Fabrizio Loreto). He teaches History of Migration in the Contemporary Age at the University of Pisa.
