How do we make decisions in conditions of uncertainty? Why do trust and cooperation prevail in some contexts, whilst in others conflicts, strategies and opportunistic choices emerge? Behavioural economics and game theory are well-established tools for exploring these dynamics. The aim of this seminar is to illustrate how, in educational contexts, it is important to integrate the findings of these approaches with the concept of social capital, understood as a relational resource that guides collective behaviour and strengthens the ability to cope with complexity. Furthermore, the emergence of generative AI raises new questions for educational research; our proposal is that the integration of behavioural economics, game theory and artificial intelligence constitutes an innovative approach and a valuable educational resource. Through simulations and shared dilemmas, students develop critical thinking and ethical judgement skills, thereby learning to interact with technologies in a more informed manner.
THE SPEAKERS. Luciano Seta has been a researcher at the CNR since 2001, initially at the ITD and, since 2024, at the ISMed in Palermo. Prior to this, he obtained a PhD in Mathematical Physics from the University of Catania, where he worked on complex systems and the main models of mathematical physics. His research has focused on Technology-Enhanced Learning, e-learning, mobile learning, data analysis techniques and the modelling of educational interaction in lifelong learning. He has worked on psycho-educational aspects related to motivation, attention and behaviour management, with a view to developing digital wellbeing. Recently, he has investigated the application of the behavioural economics paradigm to the development of learning environments capable of integrating educational technologies with values of equity and participation. He is the author of more than 40 publications.
Stefania Badiglio holds a PhD in Applied Economics from LUMSA University in Palermo and has been an associate researcher at ISMed since 2024. She has been a lecturer at LUMSA University in Palermo since 2016, where she teaches Mathematical Methods for Economics and Financial Mathematics. Since 2022, she has been teaching the Basic Mathematics Skills course at the Faculty of Psychology, University of Palermo. Her research focuses on applied, experimental and behavioural economics. She has developed expertise in managing experimental interventions in the field of Behavioural Economics, in designing experimental protocols to measure social capital using economic games applied to the school context, and in analysing the impact of AI on specific cognitivebiases. She has collaborated with ISMed on the ‘PNRR – National Biodiversity Future Centre – NBFC SPOKE 2’ project. Furthermore, she has experience in designing surveys and in the processing and statistical analysis of data.
