The second lesson deals with migration flows and policies developed during the twenty years of Fascism. Faced with the international blockade of migratory flows, decided by the major destination countries and then imposed by the economic crisis of 1929, fascism radically changed its approach to migration. Laws were issued which tried to hinder expatriation, but also to prevent internal movements within the national territory, in particular towards the major cities. The suppression of Libyan resistance and the aggression against Ethiopia opened new avenues for Italian emigration, under the control of the State. At the end of the 1930s, bilateral agreements with Nazi Germany directed the unemployed Italians towards Hitler's war economy.

Stefano Gallo (CNR-ISMed) reviews the main stages of this history, flanking Italian and global history. Sources, statistics and keys to understanding one of the most delicate moments in the history of contemporary Italy from the point of view of the history of migration are made available.

THE CYCLE OF LESSONS: "A century of migrations in Italy (1920-2020)" is a series of lessons dedicated to the history of migration, organized by CNR-ISMed and Libraries of Rome. The idea was born in March 2020, in the midst of the restrictions linked to the Covid-19 epidemic, to continue to tell the story from home. An opportunity for students, teachers, readers, researchers, simple onlookers, who can confront themselves directly with experts in the subject.

What do we know about the history of migration in Italy? When, how and why did Italian citizens emigrate abroad? By whom and how is foreign immigration composed? What are the main trajectories of internal migration?
