From April 14th to 16th, the Third Meeting on DNA-Based Molecular Approaches for Species Identification and Population Structure of Bluefin Tuna Larvae was held in Naples, in the Sala De Rosa at the National Research Council (CNR-ISMed, Via G. Sanfelice 8, 7th floor). The meeting was an international event dedicated to the development and application of innovative molecular methodologies for the study of Atlantic bluefin tuna. The meeting is part of the project “Joint research on tuna larvae in Sicilian and Levantine spawning areas: sampling strategies and data analysis methodologies (SILEV)”.

The event brought together Italian and Turkish researchers and experts with the aim of strengthening scientific cooperation and promoting shared approaches for the identification of the earliest life stages of the species, which are often not distinguishable through traditional morphological methods. In this context, particular attention was given to DNA-based techniques, considered essential for improving the accuracy of analyses and supporting monitoring activities.

Among the main topics addressed, a central role was given to the study of the genetic structure and biodiversity of Atlantic bluefin tuna populations in the eastern and central Mediterranean, through the use of advanced technologies and integrated approaches. Emerging methodologies for species research were also discussed, including tools for assessing larval condition, innovative techniques for population estimation, and non-invasive monitoring systems.

The meeting represented an important opportunity for discussion and exchange of experiences, allowing participants to define common guidelines, harmonize sampling and analysis protocols, and plan future joint activities.

The event concluded with the drafting of a shared report, which will serve as a basis for the development of future research phases and for strengthening international collaborations in the study and sustainable management of Atlantic bluefin tuna in the Mediterranean. Further meetings among project partners are already planned in the coming months, aimed at monitoring progress and coordinating upcoming activities.

The meeting was restricted to project partners.
