Mediterranean Economies 2025. The Mediterranean as a Laboratory of Geoeconomics and Global Transformations, edited by Salvatore Capasso and Giovanni Canitano, has been published.

Abstract

The Mediterranean as a Laboratory of Geoeconomics and Global Transformations

The Mediterranean has long been a crossroads of peoples, economies, and powers. In today’s fragmented global order, it emerges as a strategic hinge where geopolitical tensions, economic interdependence, and social transformations intersect. Mediterranean Economies 2025 interprets the region as a laboratory of geoeconomics, a space in which power is increasingly exercised through infrastructures, trade corridors, energy systems, migration dynamics, and cultural assets rather than through military force alone.

Bringing together interdisciplinary and multi-scalar perspectives, the volume explores how fragility and agency coexist across the Mediterranean. From war and diplomacy to connectivity, migration, digitalisation, ageing, energy, and ecological transition, the contributions show how crises generate both vulnerability and innovation. The book argues that the Mediterranean is neither a declining periphery nor a stable bridge, but a contested space where global transformations are tested in practice.

Combining academic analysis with policy relevance, Mediterranean Economies 2025 offers a comprehensive framework for understanding how interdependence, conflict, and cooperation shape the future of the region—and what the Mediterranean can teach us about the possibilities and limits of governance in a multipolar world.
